Warm Fuzzies for the Kids
Domestic Violence happens, and too often children are involved, or are witness to it. When a domestic violence call involves a child, the crisis responders often offer them a small toy or stuffed animal to help calm them during that traumatic event.
Recently, a coordinator with North Alabama Crises Services reached out to me regarding our community kindness project, the Rocket City Knots Group. She asked about providing their responders with hand crafted #WarmFuzzies to offer to kids in these scary situations. Of course, I knew that it was something our group would be thrilled to do.
What is a #WarmFuzzy? A Warm Fuzzy is a hand knitted or crocheted toy that we leave around town for people to find. It's our way fo spreading smiles to our neighbors. (Think "painted rock project" but with yarn.)
I have created the Warm Fuzzies for the Kids Facebook group, where several local crafters have joined me in the effort to provide Warm Fuzzies to Crisis Services of North Alabama. This facebook group will be a place to post meet-up opportunities, pattern information, pictures of our individual projects, and delivery information. You can find out more by clicking here.
Our toys must be safe for small children, so using minimal pieces and acrylic or cotton yarn is ideal. Warm Fuzzies sewn with fabric are welcomed, too! We'd like to keep them between 3" and 6" in size so responders can easily carry them in their bags. We'll be making our first delivery this week. So far, we have at least 18 toys made and my hope is to double that in the next 2 weeks.
